Free Software
The IT unit provides 3 ways to access free-of-charge software packages: Locally installed, NAL distributed, and Terminal based (Citrix).
Installed on your PC
The IT unit provides a set of free of charge software packages. A new computer purchased by a staff member is delivered with Windows XP. The process of deploying a new computer in a lab or office involves an automated procedure that installes the following free-of-charge software packages:
- Microsoft Office 2003/2007
- Acrobat Reader or compatible
- Office Scan Anti-Virus
- Zip Genius
- Maxthon - Internet Explorer enhancer
NAL distributed
The Application Launcher (NAL) is part of a software delivery process that lets the IT unit distribute and centrally manage the applications that you see at your workstation. This allows The Life Sciences IT Unit to maintain the most up to date programs without physically visiting every machine and installing the new program. The program called NAL displays list of software packages that can be used free of charge. These include:
- Scientific applications:
- Mathematical: Matlab, Mathematica, Maple
- Statistical: SPSS, Statistica, SAS
- TeX suite
- Terminal Emulation
- Exceed (for X-Windows emulation)
- Logistic System
Citrix
Citrix offers a secure remote access solution into TAU Windows operating environment and its network resources over the public internet. With Citrix the processing of applications is moved completely off a user's desktop and onto a server . Only screen updates, mouse movements and keyboard information is transmitted between the client and the server using Citrix protocol.

Some software packages such can be found at the general warehouse. Try the General Warehouse catalog.
Buy software for your home computer
Before purchasing software, please note that certain new computer systems include a wide variety of software.
